Here is a photo of a traditional style henna tattoo. This design is quite intricate, and is covers the fingers, hand and a bit of the lower arm.

This is a free hand or chef's choice henna and a photo of henna paste on the skin. The finished color will be shades of red to reddish brown.

Stop by the shop Noon thirty-ish this Saturday for henna tattoo by Ann George.

Pictured in this blog is a photo of an African tribal style henna which shows henna paste on the back of the hand, and paste and finished color on the inner wrist... notice the inner wrist tattoo is outlined again with henna paste.

Henna can last one week or more, depending on where you put the tattoo, how long you leave the paste on the skin, and other factors.

The Sankofa pattern on the wrist had faded a bit, so we outlined the original design with fresh henna paste to give a two-toned effect.

Once the henna paste is scraped off the skin, the bird will have a darker outline and an inner color.

Please know that all henna pastes are different. At the Midnight Sun you will get an informed consent to sign before you have your henna tattoo. This will tell you all the ingredients in the paste ( made fresh by Ann George! ), as well as how to take care of your body art.

An Spirit Vision, we do not use black henna, and make every effort to ensure that you have a traditional henna experience. Of course there are other artists in town, so please remember that each will have their own paste, pattern sets and aftercare instructions.

Traditional Henna Pattern for Sonya

Many thanks to Sonya for ordering a traditional henna pattern. This design is one of many from the little henna pattern books imported from India.

Mixing a very fluid paste helps make this kind of fine line henna tattoo possible. I used a henna cone made of florist wrap, not quite mylar... but a shear & flexible cellophane type material. I cut just a bit off the tip of the cone, and the began the pattern at the wrist.

I used the 2009 Jamila henna powder, so it was easy to make a very fine paste. As well, this year's crop is extra wonderful in that it is very gummy all on it's own. The addition of henna tea made with fenugreek seeds also helps to create a cohesive paste that flows smoothly onto the skin.

*Please note: This is a photo of henna paste ON the skin. I do not offer black henna. Once this paste has remained on the skin long enough ( 3 -6 hours) to give a good stain, you scrape the black paste off to reveal the henna color ( light orange to dark reddish brown) which will develop over the next 48 hours.

The quality of your finished henna tattoo depends in part on how well you take care of your design.

Henna Pattern for Back of Hand - $15 Henna

Here are three little henna tattoos for the back of the hand. Each girl chose a pattern style from one of the many pattern books on hand.. and then said "something like this"... the best way to ensure that you get a henna tattoo that fits your budget & your style.

Henna tattoos start at $15 each and go up in price from there. So.. it is important to give a bit of thought to where to put your tattoo, as well, what to wear to show it off, particularly if you are getting henna on the foot, belly or lower back! There are lots of tips in the blog to help you pick a good pattern!

Henna Pattern for Back of Hand

Here is a photo of a traditional henna tattoo design taken from a book of patterns I bought about 5 years ago. My client really like the stupa decoration at the wrist, as well as the full hand pattern and intricate design.

This pattern took about 35 minutes to apply. The henna paste I am using this year is a bit wetter than pastes I have used in the past, so the henna flows freely from the cone and takes a bit longer to dry. This slower dry time results in a better finished color, although it does require that you are careful with your tattoo about 15 minutes longer than last year's paste.

Full Palm Henna Tattoo - paste on & paste off

This is a photo on an original henna tattoo design for the full palm. The pattern started and the wrist and was worked down onto the palm and finally the fingers.

This henna tattoo was done with a fairly wet paste, so there was plenty of time for the henna to be absorbed into the skin. This wet paste yielded a good finished color as you will see below.


Here is a photo of the henna tattoo with the paste off the skin. As you can see (click the photo for a larger view) the henna stains different parts of the hand different shades of red to reddish brown.
This henna paste has only been off the skin for 24 hours, so it will take another 24 hours for the final color to show up.

Many people want to know how long a henna tattoo will last. Spirit Vision Henna uses fine, natural ingredients with no chemical additives. The paste is made to give the darkest color possible, but aftercare is really important to getting a long lasting stain.

If you will leave the paste on the skin (first photo) for at least 6 hours, and if you will keep olive oil on the design (apply at least twice a day) and you are able to stay out of water for at least 12 hours after the paste is off the skin, then you will get the best color.

Here is a lovely henna tattoo for the back. This henna design is adapted from the Sangeet Pattern Book by Neeta Sharma.

This is far and away the most popular book of henna designs I have on hand. Her designs are eye catching, traditional, and many are little henna jewels that go anywhere.

This henna tattoo is one example of her art. I like the design because it adapts so easily to the shoulder. Please know that henna does not stain the skin on the shoulder, neck or back the same deep rich color that you see on the palms of the hands. Some clients leave the henna paste on long enough, and stay warm enough to get a rich color on the back,

Henna Season At The Midnight Sun - Appointments Welcome

Henna Season starts today at The Midnight Sun. Spirit Vision Henna will offer henna tattoo from Noon 'til 5:00m today.. Saturday 3/7/09.

There are lots of pattern books to look through, or you may order a chef's choice henna like the one pictured on the left. Chef's choice makes it easy to get a design you like at price you can afford.

Simple patterns start at $15.00 this year. If you just want some tiny little jewel tattoo, also fine. Those are $10 and take under 5 minutes.

Bold henna pattern for the palms. Quick & easy.

You can drive with henna palms! If you choose a bold pattern like this one it's very easy.

You will notice that the left hand is full of henna.. but just has design going half way up the fingers & little spots to finish.

The right hand design compliments the left.. leaving plenty of free space for the little household tasks that might make full palms & fingers pattern too difficult to fit into your modern lifestyle.

From start to finish, this tattoo took 35 minute to complete.

Using bold lines & negative space to compliment the shape of the hand give a striking pattern that is easy to wear.

Practicing Peacock Arm Tattoo

Inspired by the henna video showing work by the artists of Nepal, I decided to practice to improve both speed & style.

Here is a photo of late night henna practice where the work focused on creating an armlet tattoo. I feel very good about peacock faces in general.. and I am sure the eyes are improving.

I also feel better about my use of negative space, and am remembering to double line major design areas so that they really stand out.

Also, bolding or filling some areas also sees to help bring a design to life.

Of course the greatest difficulty I find when henna-ing myself is working upside down!

And then there is not smudging as I go! This is when the use of lemon sugar glaze & a blow dryer is priceless.

I can work out the pattern, spray, dry, and continue without having to be overly careful.

I will be able to put up finished color photos of this tattoo.. so ..

Winter Time Henna Fun - Henna Parties for the Holidays

Here is a photo of a full palm henna tattoo I did at a get together. I am always happy to have true patrons of traditional henna as they give me the chance to stay in practice with free hand/traditional & fine line henna.

Winter can be a very good time to have a henna party because the house is toasty warm, most people are in sweaters, woolies, and long sleeves, so the body temperature is up! These conditions are excellent to help the henna paste give the darkest possible stain.

Also.. with all other body parts covered, I have a chance to do full palm henna tattoo. I will post some new photos from friends having henna in India soon. Be sure to stop by the henna bookstore to get the latest pattern booklets from India.

Intricate Henna Tattoo - Just a Doodle

Sometimes the loveliest mehandi is the little embellishment. This is a photo of an intricate henna tattoo that decorates the back of the hand.

This small jewel style is very popular with Western customers. It is just a touch of the exotic beauty we see in complex henna patterns... without covering the entire hand or arm. This freehand henna tattoo is clearly composed of traditional Indian components, but assembled in such a way as to fit the back of my clients hand.

This is a sample of the henna you can get at the Midnight Sun in Jacksonville, Florida... although we seem to be coming to then end of henna season. I am happy to continue to offer henna all year long, but as we move into the cooler months, it may be best to call ahead or to e-mail the Studio to be certain I will be at the shop. Namaste!

Henna Today at the Midnight Sun - Rain or Shine Henna Party

I will be at the Midnight Sun today between 1:15 and 5:15 PM, rain or shine, to do some henna tattoo.

Pictured here is a quick little pattern that took about 6 minutes to complete, is easy to wear, and just in case in rains today, easy to keep dry.

Of course, tattoos on the feet & ankles are very popular, but not the best choice for a rainy day.

I will bring lots of pattern books to choose from, but this is a "chef's choice" design created to fit the wearer.

Tribal Henna Tattoo for the Hand

Here is a tribal henna tattoo for the back of the hand. This design uses components common in many North African patterns.

In keeping with the "less is more" philosophy of life, I tried to accent the natural beauty of my clients hand using a pattern that drew the eye, but did not over whelm. Also, if you notice, the henna pattern avoids the joints of the fingers, and is "out of the way" so that a busy day can easily be accomplished.

If you do choose to get henna on the back of the hand, and want to get the darkest stain possible, then please try to leave the paste in place until you to to bed that night.

That evening, after you remove the dried paste with olive oil, sleeping in a glove (plastic or otherwise) will help heat up the henna to give a dark result.

Henna Fish - Tattoo for Festival Days

This little fish is a "chef's choice" pattern for the back of the hand. It took just a few minutes to create a henna pattern based on the koi.. or fancy goldfish concept.

Once the outline was drawn for the eyes & head, the rest of the fish just flowed along. You will notice the pattern is filled in with traditional henna components, the line, spot, curved and straight lines.

Here is another of the wonderful little booklets that helped me start to think like a henna artist. Full of 25 different patterns for hands & feet as well as little doodles for fingers and toes, this small booklet is a great addition to your henna library.

This henna pattern booklet measures 4.5" x 6.75" and has a colorful cover, sure to catch the eye of the henna newcomer. The patterns are printed on a soft grey paper that seems recycled, but I can't tell.
